Aerosal - Haloterapia, Grotta di Sale e Benessere. Il mare in una stanza.

The benefits of salt have been known for centuries. Just think of the role it has played in preserving food thanks to its antimicrobial action. The benefits on human beings were discovered in the mid-nineteenth century, when Polish doctor Felix Boczkowski related the good health of those who worked in salt mines and their working environment. In 1843 Boczkowski decided to further research into those issues that until then had been just ‘guesses’, and realized that the benefits of mines were due to trace elements present in the environment and to their concentration, plus the action of temperature and humidity. In this way he gave birth to ‘halotherapy’ (from ‘halos’ the Greek word for salt), a natural, very simple and non-invasive therapy that on the one side involves inhaling dry salt aerosol through the airways, and on the other side, the absorption of these salts through the skin.

Today, after technology advances, we are able to reproduce the exact microclimate to fully exploit the beneficial properties of salt. In fact, the treatment takes place in a salt room or ‘salt chamber’, that is, a pre-fabricated room from the structural point of view in which walls and floor are covered by salt and where there is a special generator with solid salt. This salt, due to its antibacterial properties, reduces the bacterial load of the air breathed, thus creating favourable and comfortable conditions inside the ‘chamber’.

Today salt chambers, halogenerators and salt constitute a kit, registered as Medical Device, which helps widen the benefits resulting from ‘inhaled’. In fact, inside the chamber there is a dry salt generator to distribute salt (NaC1) as spray. Once inhaled, this micronised sodium chloride has an effect on the respiratory system. Through an increasing osmotic pressure (different salt concentrations between the external part of the cell membrane and its internal part), it favours the best hydration of the mucous membranes of the respiratory system and the consequent fluidization of mucous, thus favouring the reduction of a series of diseases such as asthma, allergies, irritations, and the like.

“Aerosol” salt

Salt used is an optimised blend of sodium chloride and sodium iodide to fully reproduce the sea microclimate and to keep an adequate level of exposure to iodine. The dose added into a salt generator is micronised, controlled and packed, in special bags that are vacuum-sealed to keep salt characteristics unaltered, in the laboratory of the company authorised by the Notified Body 0476. Two types of salt (NaC1) are used to prepare the blend: RG salt (According to Ph Eur Current Edition) and ESCO iodised salt. The quantity of iodine present in the ESCO salt and spread inside the chamber need not to be pharmacologically relevant in order to achieve a therapeutic activity.

The laboratory

The company has a laboratory equipped for the micronisation, control and packaging of doses to be added into a dry salt aerosol generator and authorised by Notified Body 0476, unlike other systems that micronise and crush salt directly inside the halogenerator, thus controlled dosing is not possible.

When by the sea, if you are in an area with rocky coasts, you will have the chance of inhaling marine salt in a natural way.
